The Springboard, Or A Prayer for Finals

The Springboard by Adrienne Rich

Like divers, we ourselves must make the jump
That sets the taut board bounding underfoot
Clean as an axe blade driven in a stump;
But afterward what makes the body shoot
Into its pure and irresistible curve
Is of a a force beyond all bodily powers.
So action takes velocity with a verve
Swifter, more sure than any will of ours.

  1. Oh, good. You’re still writing! I was getting worried. Blessings on all those things that seem so urgent now and mystifying later. Julian of Norwich had it right: All will be well, and all will be well, and all manner of things will be well.

  2. Jeff Coblentz

    Or as HST said, “When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.”
